The Special Couple: Hilda + David

THE FIRST SIGHT

David and I met eight years ago when we both worked in a restaurant. We became good friends and went on a first date five months later. My brother had gotten me the job; when he found out that we were officially a couple, my brother confessed that before I started my job, he had jokingly said to David, "Stay away from my sister!" little did he know that eight years down the track we would be getting married.

THE PROPOSAL

We had booked a long weekend in SA. We've always wanted to do the Barossa Valley winery tours. I was very suspicious that David might propose over that weekend as he insisted that I get my nails done. Our last tour stop was at the Maggie Beer farm, and I found out later that David had organised a picnic set up with wine and a cheeseboard where he was planning to propose. His plans went out of the window when the weather turned on us! When we returned to the hotel, David was not going to let anything get in the way of us being engaged by the end of that weekend. So, David said that he needed to tell me something. He had prepared an amazing speech about our relationship, life and future together and then asked me to be his wife. The proposal was not everything that David had wanted, but we then realised that it couldn't have been more perfect than what it was. Just the two of us after an amazing day. That night we stayed up until sunrise and talked about our future. We kept our engagement a secret for a few days to soak in the happiness.

THE INSPIRATION & VENUE

Our wedding theme was floral, ivory, blush and cream flowers with a hint of wog. Our initial idea was to have an enchanted floral theme with an outdoor reception, fairy lights and covered top to bottom with flowers. We had 220 people at our big wedding, so in the end, we had to compromise our ideas.

THE BRIDAL LOOK

I always wanted to look like myself for my wedding day and was looking for something effortless. I wanted a look like Natalie Portman in that Miss Dior ad or Meghan Markle with her natural beauty. So I knew what I was looking for had to be classic, timeless, and elegant with a natural flow.

SAYING 'YES' TO THE DRESS AT GALIA LAHAV TRUNK SHOW

I tried on five gowns; the fifth one was the winner. I attended the Galia Lahav trunk show at the Langham Hotel held by Eternal Bridal. We were greeted with champaign and my Eternal Bridal stylist Katherine asked me what I was looking for and suggested that I try on the Georgia gown by Galia Lahav. I didn't think much of it when it was on the rack, but when I put it on and walked out of the change room, the whole room was silent, and all I could say was, "This is it". My wedding gown stood out because of the rosy undertone, the subtle shimmer of the sparkles every time I moved and the way it flowed from my waist and dragged along the floor as I walked. It was perfect. 

THE BEST THING ABOUT OUR DAY

There were so many highlights. The whole day was so much fun! Our favourite was the ceremony, walking down the aisle in the beautiful Roman church, St Mary's Star of the Sea. The room was full of love, smiling faces and pure happiness. It was the most emotional part of the day. We had never been as happy as we were at that moment.

HILDA'S ADVICE

My advice would be the most important thing is that everything you are stressing about now will not matter on the day.
